Native Milwaukeean, historian, engineer, and author Thomas Fehring captures the essence of how Milwaukee came to be “The Machine Shop of the World.” His writing highlights the inventions created and pioneered by Milwaukeeans for a century after the Civil War, from the 1860s through mid-1900s. Each piece of the magnificent manufacturing puzzle is attributed to its respective Industrial Neighborhood of Milwaukee. This talk will focus on the city’s history of innovation along the banks of the Milwaukee River and will encompass some of Milwaukee’s earliest industrial companies.
