HMI is unveiling a new donor plaque and wall size Milwaukee art installation in the HMI store, both created by Ashley Town of Bay View Printing Co.
Mark your calendar for an open house to view the new wall! Stop by HMI on Dec. 3 between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and see how many Milwaukee buildings you can identify.
In 2016 and 2017, HMI conducted a fundraising campaign to defray the costs of moving to the 235 E. Michigan Street space. As part of that campaign, all donors who made a gift of $1,000 or more would be recognized on a permanent plaque. The more than $70,000 raised by that campaign allowed HMI to open a new office, begin selling merchandise, and add new tours and programs.
HMI staff reviewed several options before hiring Bay View Printing Co. to take on the project. As part of the design process, Ashley met with HMI staff and donors in summer. Her goal was to demonstrate the reach of HMI—its walking tours, its special events such as Spaces & Traces and Doors Open – while highlighting architecture and cultural gems. The HMI logo and mission statement was also a crucial part of the design.
Ashley purchased Bay View Print Co. in 2014. A former professor at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, she and her team create letterpress prints and custom cards in this historic Bay View shop that houses 14 antique letterpresses and a collection of more than 400 wood and lead typefaces. Bay View Printing Co. has been part of Doors Open for the past five years and has averaged 1,200 visitors.
