Historic Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Public Library are excited to present a Zoom lecture about one of Milwaukee’s most iconic images. Dan Lee, Local History Librarian, will delve into the history and mystery around this lithograph.
The phrase, “Milwaukee Feeds and Supplies the World,” was first used in 1898. The slogan and this image first appeared on the cover of The Book of Milwaukee: Development, Resources, Enterprise and Beauty of the Peerless Cream City. The book was intended to boost Milwaukee’s profile and was published in 1901 by The Evening Wisconsin, the highest circulating afternoon newspaper in the City in the early 1900s. The image was revived in the 1980s by the City of Milwaukee Department of Development who created a poster reproduction to accompany the newly minted neighborhood posters. Many wonder who the illustrator or lithographer of this popular image might be but no definitive answer has ever been found. The Milwaukee Public Library lists at least ten possible lithography companies working in Milwaukee when the image was produced.
