ABOUT Historic Milwaukee

For 50 years, Historic Milwaukee, Inc. (HMI) has been delivering tours and educational programs that promote architecture and design in Milwaukee. We are proud to be the only nonprofit in Milwaukee that presents architecture and design-focused art programming. HMI started in 1974 in the Walker’s Point neighborhood and soon expanded its footprint to Downtown and Milwaukee’s neighborhoods. HMI’s main programs include walking and app-based tours, Spaces & Traces and Doors Open Milwaukee.

Supporting Historic Milwaukee and Doors Open

By helping raise funds for Historic Milwaukee to rappel, you are helping support Doors Open Milwaukee. Doors Open Milwaukee is our largest program, with more than 73,000 site visits as people together to explore and celebrate architecture, culture, and design up close. Doors Open Milwaukee will take place the weekend following our rappelling event; September 28 & 29, 2024. This free community event costs more than $130,000 to stage annually. We are grateful to our foundation and corporate donors and sponsors but we need your help too!

About the Milwaukee Athletic Club

The Milwaukee Athletic Club recently concluded an extensive renovation maintaining the building’s historical character top-to-bottom with renovation by  J. Jeffers & Co.  Offering the best rooftop views in the city, a state-of-the-art fitness center, premier dining and event spaces, this is an ideal location for rappelers to experience Milwaukee. The Milwaukee Athletic Club formed in the 1880s and found their home at the current Broadway location in 1917. Learn more about the Milwaukee Athletic Club.

Who can rappel?

Almost anyone who has registered and raises $1,000 by September 22! No prior rappelling experience is needed. Our technicians will provide all of the training and support you need to rappel. Rappellers must weigh between 100 and 300 pounds to ensure their safety while rappelling. Anyone can participate and rappel, regardless of age. The only restriction is that anyone under the age of 18 requires a parent or guardian’s signature on the legal waiver. All participants must be able to climb stairs and ladders to access the rappelling point.

Weather Contingency

The rappelling event will happen rain or shine. In the event of extreme weather like storm with lightning, the rappel will pause until the weather improves. Rappelling will continue on Monday, Sept. 23 in the event of extreme weather on 9/22.

When will I rappel?

Friday, Sept 20 is reserved for sponsors and media, and all other rappellers will rappel on Sunday, Sept 22. Once you get close to your fundraising goal, we’ll reach out to you to schedule what time you’ll be rappelling.

What time will I rappel?

Rappel times are assigned in the order that the participant raises $1,000. The sooner you reach the minimum fundraising goal, the more rappel times you will have to choose from.

About the fundraising minimum: If you don’t raise the minimum by Sept 22, Historic Milwaukee’s mission will still benefit from your efforts to raise any amount. All donations are final and refunds will not be issued if you do not hit the $1,000 fundraising goal required to go Over The Edge.
