About the Building

This elegant house was built for James K. Ilsley and his wife, Mary Stevens Ilsley, in 1897. Mr. Ilsley was the son of Charles Ilsley, co-founder of the Marshall and Ilsley Bank in 1849. Architect, Alexander Eschweiler, designed the building modeled on the French Gothic chateau style popularized by New York’s trendsetting Vanderbilt family.  Called Chateauesque, homes of this style present a varying mixture of Gothic and Renaissance detail.
