June 5 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Stroll through the Historic Third Ward and learn more about the neighborhood’s history, growth and redevelopment. This tour is in partnership with Jane’s Walk MKE and the Milwaukee Turners.

Jane’s Walk MKE embodies Jane Jacobs’ legacy by organizing free, resident-led neighborhood explorations and building community connections by observing, discussing, storytelling, and reimagining and changing the places in which we live, work, and play. It is part of a worldwide movement with more than 200 cities hosting free, resident-led walking tours, inspired by urbanist, writer and activist Jane Jacobs.

Jane Jacobs’ writings championed a community-based approach to city building. She had no formal training as a planner, and yet her 1961 treatise, The Death & Life of Great American Cities, introduced ground-breaking ideas about how cities function, evolve, and fail that have become common sense for today’s architects, planners, policymakers, activists, and other city builders.

She is best known for galvanizing New Yorkers to stop Robert Moses’ plans for an expressway through the West Village. She believed in the power of individuals to influence their city. Today, her principles are represented in participatory planning approaches that have been embraced in communities around the world.
