I’ve stood at the front of more tour buses than I can easily count. The first was in about 1975, when the Junior League of Milwaukee requested a rolling overview of the city for its new members. I’ve led hundreds of tours since then, most often on motor coaches but also on schoolbuses, vans, limousines, bicycles and, in much shorter stretches, on foot. Interpreting the city in real time for a live audience has been a welcome counterpoint to the sedentary business of writing, even if it usually meant a cramped microphone hand and stiff legs after house on the road.
