On October 14th, 1912, before a campaign speech in Milwaukee, Theodore Roosevelt was shot at close range by saloonkeeper John Schrank while greeting the public in front of the Gilpatrick Hotel. Roosevelt was saved by the items in his breast pocket that slowed the bullet: a glasses case and a bundle of manuscript containing his evening speech.
