Building Description

Explore Milwaukee’s historic home for art on the East Side: the Charles Allis Art Museum. Designed by Alexander C. Eschweiler in 1911, this Tudor-inspired mansion was purpose-built to one day be a public museum. The Allis was bequeathed to Milwaukee by philanthropist and art collector Sarah Ball Allis in 1945. Today the Museum features rotating contemporary exhibitions alongside the historic Allis Art Collection—with works by Rembrandt, Winslow Homer, Rosa Bonheur and ceramics from 600 BCE.

Visitor Experience

Experience “Talk Back: Chapter Two” featuring the works of Christina A. West and Meg Lionel Murphy “talking back” to the historic narratives in the Allis Collection alongside Allis Artist-in-Residence Tracy Keller Nickolaus’ solo exhibition “left with your memories.” A community exhibition featuring work by the League of Milwaukee Artists will be on view in the great hall.
