Building Description
The Edith S. Hefter Conference Center is one of Milwaukee’s finest early 20th-century Lake Drive estates, designed in 1911 by architect Fitzhugh Scott. It was built for Armin A. Schlesinger, who founded Solvay Coke & Gas in 1904 and was a son of Ferdinand Shlesinger, once the largest producer of iron ore in the world. The building now houses UWM’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, dedicated to programming activities for adults who want to learn for the fun of it, as well as UWM’s University Advancement.
Visitor Experience
Visitors can enjoy a 20-minute behind-the-scenes guided tour of the first floor of the building, showcasing the restorations, highlighting unique elements and hidden spaces while learning the historical and present use of the historic mansion. Learn more about how the William A. French Co. of Minneapolis designed the interior and manufactured all of the home’s furnishings. You’ll also hear how a gift from Bert G. Hefter, in honor of late wife Edith, restored the beautiful ceilings, wood paneled walls and carved fireplaces.
