Building Description
The European Sausage Shop was a Milwaukee landmark from the 1970s until the 2000s. Built by the Nimmer family in 1905, it was originally a farm shop/butcher shop. In the 70s it was purchased by Frank Jakubczak who made and sold sausage with his family until the early 2000s. The current owners (Anna Warren and Mike Katzung) purchased the property three years ago and have restored the sausage shop to use for Tactile Craftworks, Anna’s leather goods company. The building features the preserved facade of the circa 1916 refrigerator as well as hanging racks, swinging doors, and other features present for the last century of the building’s existence.
Visitor Experience
The owners of the building and employees of Tactile Craftworks will be on site to discuss the history of the building, the recent renovation, and the current business use.
We will have some resources on hand including photos and articles of the Nimmer and Jakubczak family businesses, and extensive photos and videos of the renovation process.
Visitors will have a chance to purchase/make a souvenir leather keychain on site.
