Building Description
The Benjamin Church House was built by the New York born trained carpenter in 1844 and is the oldest house still standing in Milwaukee. It’s iconic Greek Revival Architecture is unique in Milwaukee’s architecture scene and is represented by the symmetry of the layout, Doric columns, door frames, fireplace surrounds, and other interior details. It has been a house museum since it was moved in 1938 with the assistance of WPA workers, Milwaukee County Historical Society, Milwaukee County Parks, and the Colonial Dames of Wisconsin. Inside the house, you will find early Milwaukee exhibits, 19th century artifacts, and an example of nogging -which showcases Cream City bricks from John Messenger’s brickyard in 1844.
