Building Description
Blue Dress Park is a storied patch of concrete perched above the Milwaukee River, offering a captivating overview of downtown. It is noteworthy for its seeming lack of purpose, having been described over the years as “unusual,” “extra space in the shape of half a teardrop,” “a place of pure potential,” and “anti-space.” The park was created by artist, Paul Druecke, who invited neighbors and city officials to join in a christening celebration on June 30th, 2000. This year marks the park’s 25th anniversary as well as the 15th anniversary of its participation in the inaugural Doors Open. BDP is located at the southwest corner of Holton and Reservoir, where Riverwest, Brewer’s Hill, and Brady Street neighborhoods meet. Since the park’s christening, the city and especially the river corridor, have undergone major transformations. Blue Dress Park remains happily unchanged—a symbol of enduring potential. Visitor Experience
Paul Druecke and volunteers will be on hand to welcome visitors to Blue Dress Park. The day’s events feature a recipe swap coordinated by Milwaukee Kitchen as well as brief tours and an interactive chalking event. The latter invites visitors to share their thoughts by writing them in the park, effectively turning BDP’s infamous concrete into canvas. Visitors can get a fanciful tour and history of the space including when it was covered in gingham or when hundreds of RW24 participants helped to invent its history.
