Building Description
Blue Dress Park is a storied patch of concrete perched above the Milwaukee River. Part artistic exploration and part unintended urban-planning masterpiece, the park defies expectation. Its subtlest attribute is a zen-like defiance of purpose and capitalism. Its captivating views of downtown celebrate the unexpected. The park was created by artist, Paul Druecke, who invited neighbors and city officials to join in a christening celebration on June 30th, 2000. Located at the southwest corner of Holton and Reservoir between Riverwest, Brewer’s Hill, and Brady Street, this year marks the park’s 26th anniversary. Since the park’s christening the city and river corridor have undergone major transformation. Blue Dress Park remains unchanged, “extra space in the shape of half a teardrop,” “anti-space,” and “a symbol of pure potential.” Featured photo by Max Larsen
Visitor Experience
The park’s creator, Paul Druecke, will be on hand to welcome visitors and trade stories about unique Milwaukee. We’ll have a super-sized box of sidewalk chalk for anyone who would like to help transform BDP’s infamous concrete into temporary community canvas with drawings and messages. Visitors can get a fanciful tour and history of the space including when it was covered in gingham or when hundreds of RW24 participants helped to invent its history. Stop by to share your thoughts about the city and we’ll celebrate how imagination opens doors. Commemorative postcards from the 25th Anniversary will be available while supplies last.
