Building Description

MIAD Gallery at The Ave resides within The Matthews Building, built in 1892. Originally part of the Grand Avenue mall, this historic structure is now known as The Avenue and stands as a testament to Milwaukee’s architectural heritage. The gallery is housed in a 2,500-square-foot, street-level space that was previously used by an OfficeMax store. The building also was home to a Woolworth’s store between 1912 and 1994. The Matthews Building features a terracotta facade and beautiful decorative metalwork.

Visitor Experience

MIAD Gallery at The Ave hosts a variety of exhibitions throughout the year, including solo shows, group shows, and student exhibitions. The gallery also offers educational programs and special events, such as artist talks and workshops. During Doors Open Milwaukee, we invite you to explore your city through a fresh lens! MIAD Gallery at The Ave presents an exhibition featuring handmade, screen-printed posters by our Communication Design students. Each student used their unique creativity to capture the essence of Milwaukee in a limited-edition, signed, and numbered poster priced at $25 each. Celebrate the city’s character through these vibrant works, with a portion of sales supporting the student artists. Don’t miss this opportunity to see Milwaukee in a whole new light!
