Building Description
The Martin Luther King Library opened in 2025 as Milwaukee Public Library’s newest branch and serves as a cornerstone of the revitalization of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive corridor. Designed by Moody Nolan, the mixed-use development combines a modern public library with affordable housing, creating a vibrant community destination that supports lifelong learning, neighborhood engagement, and residential living.
The library was designed with sustainability at its core and incorporates numerous environmentally friendly features, including rooftop solar panels, Southeast Wisconsin’s first Darcy System geothermal heating and cooling system, a planted green roof, pervious paving for stormwater management, and infrastructure for future electric vehicle charging stations. These features reflect Milwaukee Public Library’s commitment to environmental stewardship and innovative building design.
In 2026, the Martin Luther King Library & Apartments received a Mayor’s Design Award in the Urbanism Redefined category, recognizing the project for its innovative architecture, sustainable design, and positive contribution to Milwaukee’s built environment.
Visitor Experience
Visitors to the Martin Luther King Library will have the opportunity to explore Milwaukee Public Library’s newest branch through guided tours highlighting the building’s architecture, sustainable design, and role as a neighborhood community hub. Tours will introduce guests to the library’s public spaces, including the Community Room and Makerspace, while sharing the story behind the building’s development and its recognition with a 2026 Mayor’s Design Award.
During the event, visitors will learn about the building’s environmentally sustainable design features and how they support the library’s operations. Guided tours will also include select behind-the-scenes library spaces that are not typically open to the public, offering visitors a unique look at library operations and the work that supports services for the community.
Library staff will be available throughout the event to answer questions about the building, library services, and the branch’s role in the surrounding neighborhood.
