Building Description
Once home to Gimbels-Schuster’s Department Store, this historic building on King Drive has entered a new chapter as ThriveOn King, a community hub at the intersection of Halyard Park, Harambee and Brewers Hill. The building dates to 1907 and was designed by Milwaukee architects Kirchhoff & Rose. Its original brick façade, once hidden beneath metal cladding, was revealed during the building’s restoration and redevelopment.
Today, ThriveOn King brings together community gathering spaces, offices, housing, early childhood education, health and wellness programs, and other resources under one roof. The first floor serves as a welcoming public space with meeting areas, local artwork and Kinship Café. Explore the building and see how a historic department store has been reimagined for a new generation of Milwaukeeans.
