Building Description
Beloved by many and filled with a vibrant history, Washington Park has entranced the public for 134 years. This park turned racetrack turned zoo turned county park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (of Central Park fame) and boasts over 120 acres of green space. It engages visitors through its invaluable features, which include a lagoon, orchard, prairie, splash pad, bandshell, basketball courts, pocket parks, multi-use trails, and so much more. One inescapable feature is a branch of the Urban Ecology Center.
The Urban Ecology Center (UEC) planted itself in Washington Park in 2007, initially inhabiting the old boathouse on the lagoon. The organization gathered community in this space until 2023, when reconstruction and expansion of the building began. After 10 years of community listening sessions and thoughtful planning, the UEC re-opened a 29,000 square foot beauty in February 2025.
Designed by Quorum Architects Inc., this vessel is a third-space for the community to rest, gather, have fun, and learn about all the beings that call Washington Park home. From the smallest features like bird glass to the largest like a three-level observation deck, visitors will experience a space that incorporates the natural world into every nook and cranny.
Fun fact: it is the first all-electric non-residential building in Milwaukee County!
Visitor Experience
The UEC specializes in urban foundational nature-based experiences and ecological revitalization. Upon arriving, visitors will engage with this work right away! Starting at the front desk, visitors can get a lay of the land from a UEC team member. They’ll be invited to grab a cup of coffee, check out an activity backpack, borrow a fishing pole, or to continue their journey in other exciting parts of the building or park. From there, visitors can head upstairs to catch a gorgeous view on the observation deck and or get cozy in the bird library. They can also linger longer downstairs and dive deeper into our niche of ecology, education, and community by visiting the Ecology Room, glancing into classrooms, or taking a moment to admire two stunning murals painted by local artists, Mi Salgado and Tia Richardson. They may even get a little peek into our Cozy Closet.
Whatever path visitors choose, they’ll find it lined with so much life!
