Building Description
Downer Woods is an 11-acre urban forest nestled in the northeast corner of UWM’s campus and one of Milwaukee’s most unique natural spaces. This remnant woodland preserves a glimpse of the forest that once covered much of southeastern Wisconsin. Managed as a natural area by the UWM Field Station since 1998, the site has undergone extensive ecological restoration, including the removal of invasive species. Its trail system includes small bridges that cross streams and allows visitors to experience the forest while protecting its sensitive habitat. It’s also an outdoor classroom, research site and community green space beloved for its plants, wildlife and peaceful setting.
