Building Description

Welcome to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health, Wisconsin’s first nationally accredited College of public health! Built in 1919, our building first hosted a hosiery factory and then was a cold storage facility for the Pabst Brewing Company. A generous donation from the Zilber Family Foundation allowed for renovation by Eppstein Uhen Architects. The LEED Gold Certified building opened in August of 2012. The building includes a welcoming atrium, state-of-the-art technology, exposed steel beams and unique views of the Milwaukee skyline. Building Features: 1) Two-thirds of the building (south side of building) is original construction, and one-third of the building (north side of building) is new. 2) Environmentally sustainable design: – LEED Gold Certified. – 95% of construction waste was recycled. – 80% of existing building was salvaged. – 42% of construction materials were sourced from within 500 miles of building site.

Visitor Experience

The Zilber College of Public Health building maintains some of the original architecture. In some areas of the building you can see where the new building meets with the original building structure. Also, the south end stairwell contains restored original bricking.
