Building Description
The Office of Sustainability plays a crucial role in upholding UWM’s longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship. It manages 33 distinct reuse, recycling, and waste streams on behalf of the UWM campus and diverts over 1 million pounds of materials away from the landfill each year. Other efforts include composting, a campus orchard, eight green roofs and capturing more than 16.5 million gallons of stormwater annually. Always top of mind is teaching students about challenges such as food insecurity, habitat degradation, and how to bring their sustainability ideas to life.
Visitor Experience
Come for the 900-pound bale of plastic bags. Stay to see how UWM turns waste into revenue, everything from food scraps to surplus furniture, all while contributing to a more resilient community. Guided tours (ticketed) will leave from the School of Architecture & Urban Planning’s first-floor Marcus Commons area at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sustainability staff will be on hand to share details of their work and answer questions from visitors, including how a brand-new plastic film recycling program helped UWM earn the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Recycling Excellence Award in 2025.
