Building Description

The cornerstone for the current St. Margaret Mary Church building, on the corner of 92nd and Capitol in Milwaukee, was laid on October 17, 1976. The first Mass was held on Feast of the Sacred Heart, June 17, 1977, and the dedication of the church took place on the Feast of St. Margaret Mary, October 16, 1977.
This stunning mid-century modern church, designed by Rupp, Knopp and Lambert, is made of natural stone, contains an altar of travertine walnut marble and a 14-foot statue of the Risen Christ. The interior of the church contains rows of stained-glass displayed in varying elevations. The outside wall of the building facing 92nd Street and Capitol Drive features a 14-foot bronze statue of St. Margaret Mary and the heart of Christ.
During a renovation in 2001 an additional stained-glass window was installed above the interior center door of the church, symbolizing the diversity and unity of St. Margaret Mary parishioners. A new baptismal font which features continuously flowing water and an ambry to hold the sacred oils was also installed in the 2001 renovation.
St. Margaret Mary parish was originally established in May of 1955. The first Masses were held at Divine Savior High School. Groundbreaking for the original church was held in 1956, and the first Mass was held on April 14, 1957. The original church used by St. Margaret Mary parish was renovated and is still in use today as our gymnasium.
